Internship: Portraits of Palestine

PORTRAITS OF PALESTINE INTERNSHIP:

Project Description:

This project collects portraits that portray as many people as possible, to include ordinary people of different professions, ages, towns… etc.  Palestine is often represented by its landscape but in this project the faces become the landscape of Palestine.  Captions to the portraits might include name, age, address, date and profession. Though ultimately the faces tell their stories. The project will shoot around 1,000 portraits before selecting around 100 for the book.

Internship Description:

Intern will accompany supervisor on photo shoots as a research assistant. The purpose is for the research assistant to collect texts that can be used as a caption for each image in the photo book.

Responsibilities include:

  • Initiate conversations with individuals (fluent Arabic needed)
  • Collect stories by handwriting notes that highlight an interesting story, idea or quotes, keeping in mind the purpose of these notes and collecting a “useable” text.
  • Submit transcribed notes in the form of paragraph or half page or sentences that are useful for a caption to the photograph
  • Discern what is “valuable” for the project.
  • Turn in edited texts within 6 days following a field visit.

Skills Required:

  • Friendly and good at encouraging conversation (Arabic)
  • Notetaking and typing
  • Prompt at meeting deadlines
  • Strong English and editing
  • Knowledge of camera operation helpful

Time Required:

Frequency of Fieldtrips: 1 day per week, Saturday or Sunday

Length of Fieldtrips: 2-4 hours of research plus transportation time.

Length of Writing at Home: 2 hours per week.
